What is barley and what kind of soil is it adapted to? Barley is an annual long-day crop. But it can also adapt to variable day lengths. Barley is one of the most reproductive cereals. It gives 5 – 8 siblings in normal time. The average plant height is 35-100 cm. The ears are on average 8 – 15 cm long and have 2, 4 and 6 rows. The grain structure contains 9% crude protein and 67% carbohydrate. Barley is one of the most cultivated cereals after wheat among cool climate cereals. Barley is mostly used as animal feed. Its value as feed is 95% of corn. It is desired to have a high protein ratio in feed barley. Too much spelt reduces the nutritional value of barley. One of the important areas where it is used is the malt industry. The malt required for beer production is obtained from two-row white barleys. It is necessary to have a low protein rate in beer barleys. Most of the barleys grown in our country are beer barleys. If agricultural processes are carried out properly, barley will be one of the agricultural products that bring foreign currency to our country, as its quality will increase even more and export opportunities will arise. Although the water requirement of barley is not as much as wheat, there is a need for sufficient soil and water for abundant yield and quality product. If irrigation is to be done in barley, two waters are given, the first water is given at the stalk emergence and the second water is given at the milking period. If only one water is to be given, it should be applied at the milking stage. The point to be applied in irrigation is to meet the water needed by the barley in the soil with irrigation water during the development period of the plant, when rainfall is not sufficient.
