Celery Cultivation

Celery is a 2-year plant whose roots and petioles are utilized as vegetables, when it is produced for its seed, and a one-year plant when it is produced as a vegetable. The cultivation area and production amount of celery vary from year to year. In our country, approximately 18.000-20.000 tons of celery is produced in an area of 1200-1500 hectares. Celery, which is among the winter vegetables, is consumed only in winter months, so its production and consumption amount is low compared to other vegetables. Celery is a poor vegetable in terms of carbohydrates and vitamin protein. It is not known exactly when and where celery became a cultivated plant. Watering After planting, the water needed by the plant should be given to the plant regularly without interruption. Withholding water or giving too little water adversely affects the development of the plant and the quality of the parts used as vegetables. In summer plantings, the amount of water required by the plant is quite high from planting until November. In addition, rust disease is seen in celery grown in excessive irrigation or in rainy regions. Rust disease decreases the market value of the product and negatively affects root development. In rainy regions, irrigation in the form of frequent planting sprinkling should be avoided.
