Algae Formation in Water Tanks and Prevention Methods

One of the common problems you may encounter when storing your rainwater, domestic water or drinking water in a water storage tank is algae. By knowing about the formation and spread of algae, you can prevent this problem and keep your water clean for longer.

How do mosses grow?

Algae are single-celled or multicellular organisms that contain chlorophyll and grow through photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs light energy of all colors except green, and green light is reflected back from the algae. This process allows algae to produce food and oxygen. For photosynthesis to take place, carbon dioxide, water and light energy must be present together. When these conditions are met, algae begin to grow. Especially in stagnant water tanks where there is no water circulation, algae growth occurs when exposed to sunlight and increases over time. To solve this problem, you can review our articles titled “How to Clean a Water Tank?” or “What is a Water Tank Cover?”.

Factors Affecting Algae Growth

  • Light: Algae need light energy to grow. The more sunlight that enters the reservoir, the better the algae’s chances of survival.
  • Nutrients: Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus accelerate algae growth.
  • Temperature: Warm water leads to increased algae growth.
  • Turbidity (Water Clarity): Particles suspended in the water affect how light travels. The clearer the water, the more sunlight penetrates.

How to Prevent Algae Formation in Your Water Tank

  • Light Proof Tank: If you are buying a new water tank, look for a water tank with a UV layer that does not transmit light.
  • Water Tank Cover: If you have a transparent white water tank that transmits sunlight, use a water tank cover or position your water tank out of the light. (Note: Do not carry your water tank full.)
  • Caustic Use: Chemicals such as bleach kill microorganisms. You can prevent algae by using caustic, but be careful when using it for drinking water.
  • Chlorine Use: Chlorine is an effective substance used to control water safety. It is important to adjust the amount of use according to the size of the water tank.
  • Cleaning Wash the inside of the tank thoroughly with dishwashing detergent and cif with a brush and plenty of water. Make sure to remove any detergent residue.
  • Filter Usage: For use as a rainwater tank, use a strainer filter for water filling through the cover or inlet.

By applying these methods, you can prevent algae growth in your water tank and keep your water clean.
