Lentil is an annual crop with a single branched stem with a height varying between 15-75 cm depending on the variety and environmental conditions. In the Southeastern Anatolia Region where the GAP Project will be implemented, the cultivation area of legumes covers 25% of the total cultivation area. Among the edible grain legumes, red lentil ranks first with 85% of the cultivation area. Climate Requirements Lentil is a product of warm temperate and subtropical regions. However, it is also grown in high parts of tropical regions or in cool seasons. Lentil is the most resistant to drought, heat and cold among edible legumes. Since summer temperatures come early and suddenly in our region, summer months are very hot and there is no rainfall, summer lentils are not grown in the region, but winter red lentils are produced. Optimum germination temperature is 8-13 ºC and it is generally a long day plant. Vegetation period is 6-7 months depending on the climate. Irrigation Lentils are cultivated under dry conditions. Therefore, irrigation is not practiced. In addition, excess water damages the product. In addition, in extremely dry years, 1-2 water can be given if possible.
