White non-woven geotextiles produced by frequent needling and heat treatment of pure polyester based fibers much finer than millimeter are called white polyester geotextile felt. Geotextile white felt performs a separation function when placed at the interface of fine-grained soil and coarse-grained soil. Thus, it prevents material mixing due to dynamic or static load from the superstructure. Geotextiles, as a result of their continuity, flexibility, deformability, permeability and high tensile strength properties, separate two soils with different geotechnical properties without preventing the natural circulation of water.
The geotextile to be used in filtration work is required to have a suitable maximum pore opening, sufficient water permeability, low compaction and high porosity. After the placement of the geotextile, some fine-grained soil is transported along with the water in the ground. This material, which is transported in the first place, must pass through the geotextile. Thus, a layer is formed opposite the geotextile in which there is no fine-grained material. This naturally acts as a sieved filter layer, preventing the movement of small particles towards the geotextile. If these fines are retained in the geotextile, a less permeable layer is formed and the flow of water is prevented. The permeability of the geotextile should be at least as permeable as the permeability of the soil in order to prevent the flow of water and to prevent the formation of pore water pressure. Considering the risk of clogging and the compressibility of the geotextile, the safety factor is taken as 10 or 100 (for important dams).
Geotextiles to be used for drainage purposes should have high permeability in its own plane, high resistance to pressure and good filter properties.Reinforcement Function The point loads are spread evenly over a large area and strengthen the soil mass by resisting the tensile forces generated. Unlike soils, geotextiles have tensile resistance. By increasing tensile strength and the ability to deform before rupture, they provide reinforcement of the soil. Thanks to reinforcement, road construction in soft soils can be realized with significant aggregate savings.
It is used to protect waterproofing applications in building foundations due to its pressure spreading effect. It provides control of erosion caused by rain. It provides erosion control against water level drop and wave movements. Reducing the pore water pressures caused by the use of high water content material during manufacturing provides increased dam stability.
The geotextile protects the desired material by reducing or spreading deformation and stress. geotextile placed between two materials (e.g. between asphalt pavement and old pavement or between geomembrane and aggregate) protects one of the materials (asphalt pavement or geomembrane)
In conclusion, it is a fact that geosynthetics, which can be analyzed in two main groups as mechanical and hydraulic, and which can have reinforcement, reinforcement, separation, insulation, filtration and drainage functions, have been increasingly used in the last 20-30 years and have been effective in solving problems related to civil engineering. These materials, which can be used in a wide variety of works instead of traditional methods, give the soil new properties that it does not naturally have, improve engineering parameters, provide direct and indirect advantages and cause various recoveries. Within the scope of this paper, the benefits provided according to the places where they are used are also comprehensively examined.
